(01)Challenge

District general hospitals that provide level 1 and 2 paediatric critical care must record detailed patient-level data for national returns, without it taking over the shift.

Regional teams also need a live picture of beds and staffing, especially through the winter months.

(02)What we built

A secure web platform for daily patient-level data entry, national dataset extracts, and local and regional dashboards of bed capacity.

It is hosted on the NHS Health and Social Care Network and works on desktop, tablet and mobile.

(03)Result

Data is entered once and used both for national returns and for day-to-day capacity planning across the region.

What it does

  • Daily updates in seconds

Designed so a patient’s daily assessment takes under 30 seconds, with the previous day’s interventions copied forward in one click.

  • National extracts

PCCMDS v1 and v2, HRG4 and SUS-compliant extract files, with anonymised exports when needed.

  • Live beds

Units share bed occupancy and staffing in a quick daily status update, designed to take under 90 seconds.

  • Regional dashboards

Local and regional real-time dashboards and maps help plan beds and resources.

  • COVID-19 module

Records suspected and confirmed cases, testing, symptoms, co-infection, laboratory markers, echocardiogram findings and medication.

  • ICD-10 lookup

Diagnoses are coded with a built-in ICD-10 search, so data stays consistent.

Original product screens use sample data; identifying details and NHS identity marks are removed. Platforms commissioned by NHS organisations are owned and operated by those organisations.
